The Urge

In 1 Thessalonians 4:1-2, 10b-12, Paul urges and encourages the Thessalonian church to increase and abound more and more. He reminds them how he conducted himself during his short time with them and recalls that he commanded them to do the same in their ministry. He is entrusting them to hold themselves to a standard of a quiet (restful, undisturbed) life, of minding their own business, and of working with their own hands.

Talk about a practical, applicable, black-and-white commission. How honorable and special that Paul lived this out before them in their presence. How sweet the undertone of encouragement.

We, as believers, can learn two things from this passage:

  1. How to lead by action

  2. How to guide by word

Paul shows up and he sends follow-ups. He shows new believers by his own conduct how to lead an achievable, honorable lifestyle, and he continues to nurture and steer them as time goes by. He understands that to multiply the church is not to have a conference and lounge in a 5-star hotel between sessions, only to never touch base again until the next financial opportunity presents itself, but rather it is the continual shepherding and extension of sincere care as well as the continual cultivation of a personal relationship in which encouragement abounds that will cause a flock to increase and abound more and more.

Paul sows, tends, and awaits the harvest, speaking life all the while.

So, where are you? Are you on your first visit to the Thessalonians? If so, how are you conducting yourself? Have you moved on from a stewardship? If so, have you checked in lately? Or is the Lord maybe highlighting a Thessalonica to you? If so, how can you move forward in that ministry?

Ask the Lord to help you draw out of this passage the most personal, applicable conclusion for you during this particular time. He loves to give and will be glad to add wisdom to you and reveal His purpose to you. Just ask!
